Living with acne can be painful and embarrassing. It can also affect your confidence and self-esteem. Fortunately, modern treatments can help prevent, and safely and effectively reduce, acne breakouts. Ariel Ostad, MD, PC, is a board-certified dermatologist who provides the most advanced acne treatments and the latest developments in the successful alleviation of acne for young people and adults. Dr. Ostad can educate you about acne and help you find out the best acne treatment options for you.

CANDIDATES

Ideal candidates are men, women, boys, and girls who suffer from different types of acne. Your acne treatment must reflect the type of acne you have. If you struggle to control severe cystic acne that has not responded to other treatments, the appropriate treatment for you will be different than if you suffer from hormone-related acne breakouts. After a consultation and evaluation, Dr. Ostad will customize a comprehensive treatment plan for you and your acne.

Types of Acne

Increased hormone levels can cause the skin to produce an excess of sebum, making the pores susceptible to clogging. This is why acne is so common among puberty-age youth and pre-menopausal women. Whatever the root cause may be, acne is the result of pores clogged by bacteria, dead skin, sebum (skin oils), impurities, or a combination of any of these. Acne is a complex skin condition that can be caused by hormones, diet, environmental conditions, exposure to irritants, and dirt. The most common forms of acne are blackheads, whiteheads, and cystic acne, which is acne deeper in the skin.

Acne can cause various types of skin eruptions, primarily the following:

  • Cysts: hard lumps located below the skin that tend to be painful and can easily become infected and inflamed
  • Nodules: solid lumps below the skin
  • Pustules: small, reddish bumps with pus on the top—commonly known as pimples
  • Papules: raised bumps, red in color, that result from an infection of the hair follicles

Procedure

The steps of your treatment will depend on the plan of action created by Dr. Ostad. The process starts with a comprehensive evaluation of your skin to determine the type and severity of the acne, followed by a custom-developed plan for treatment. Therapies may include the following:

  • Prescription medication combined with a specialized skincare routine may be sufficient to clear mild acne.
  • For moderate to severe acne, Accutane or oral antibiotics may be prescribed.
  • A custom laser treatment can kill acne-causing bacteria, reduce oil production, and stimulate new collagen growth. For best results, you may need a series of laser treatments in combination with other therapies.

Recovery

If you undergo laser acne treatment, you may experience some redness, swelling, stinging, or burning after the procedure. These symptoms are usually mild and resolve within a few hours or by the following day. For best results, follow Dr. Ostad’s before and aftercare instructions carefully.

Results

After your acne treatment with Dr. Ostad, you will have a clearer, brighter complexion. Your confidence will soar as you are no longer going to be worried about hiding your skin. You will have the knowledge to continue your skincare routine to help prevent future breakouts and experience long-lasting results.
