The sun beckons and bathes us all in its warmth and glow. But over time, if we fail to adequately protect ourselves from its UVA and UVB rays, that warmth and glow turn to sunspots and sun damage on our skin that hold us shy of cosmetic perfection. So much so that proper prevention or treatment of age-related sun damage and sunspots can reduce the age we look by as much as a decade.

WHAT ARE SUNSPOTS?

As the name implies, sunspots come about from exposure to the sun. They are a harmless but unsightly occurrence that can detract from one’s looks and, thus, one’s self confidence. The removal of sunspots and reversal of skin damage is swift and simple and plays a large role in the beauty and cosmetic routines of many of our patients.

Sunspots appear as small brown or dark spots with an uneven edge, usually on the face, neck, chest and hands and are most commonly experienced by people with fair or light skin. These often unwanted but always harmless spots also go by the names age spots and liver spots and tend to increase in number over time, given prolonged or accumulated exposure to the sun or tanning beds.

HOW ARE SUNSPOTS TREATED?

Patients wishing to have sun spot treatment in New York have access to a variety of noninvasive and minimally-invasive treatment options at our center. These options include: PicoWay laser rejuvenation, laser skin resurfacing, chemical peels, microdermabrasion and lightening creams.

PicoWay Laser Rejuvenation is our most popular and effective treatment for sunspots and sun damage of the skin. In addition to providing superior results with fewer treatment sessions required, Picoway also requires less downtime with minimal discomfort. PicoWay is FDA approved to treat sun damage, wrinkles and acne, and works from the inside out to rejuvenate your skin.

Laser Skin Resurfacing is a popular treatment option for correcting sun damage. Through application of laser light therapy, sun spots, age spots and excess pigmentation can be safely and swiftly diminished or eliminated, leaving the skin and complexion more evenly toned, youthful and aesthetic.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) utilizes a special topical medication, followed by application of blue light that triggers a controlled damage at the proper depth of the dermis to ultimately reduce and remove indications of sun damage and sun spots.

Chemical Peels are another effective treatment option which helps to reduce unwanted fine lines and wrinkles, as well as sun damage and sunspots. By applying specially formulated chemical solutions to the skin, it emerges with a brighter glow and a more radiant appearance, free of obvious blemishes and pigmentation issues.

AM I A CANDIDATE FOR SUNSPOT TREATMENT?

Sun damage treatments are particularly well suited to patients with fair to light skin, whose brown or dark spots are thus more obvious. If you wish to turn back the clock on age-related sun damage and sunspots by as much as a decade, you are likely a candidate for one or more of our sunspot treatments.

WHAT IS RECOVERY LIKE AFTER SUNSPOT TREATMENT?

Most sunspot treatments require little to no recovery or downtime. Patients are likely to experience only minimal redness and mild swelling that will rapidly subside in the days following. Following these treatments, the skin is also likely to be more sensitive to the sun as it recovers, so liberal use of a full spectrum sunscreen is recommended.
