Laser therapy is a non-invasive treatment. Dr. Ostad uses the excel V™ laser, which combines two wavelengths for maximum skin penetration: a 532 nm KTP laser wavelength and two 1064 nm Nd: Yag laser wavelengths. This device uses pulses of laser energy to target the vein. Many patients claim that it feels like a stinging sensation. The laser is absorbed by an irregular blood vessel, and the light of the laser is converted into heat energy. This process destroys the blood vessel and causes it to collapse and seal shut, eventually being absorbed by the body over time.
There is little-to-no downtime with laser therapy or sclerotherapy vein treatments. Normal activities may be resumed the following day when undergoing laser therapy and immediately after sclerotherapy. Patients may be advised to wear compression stockings for some time after the procedure to ensure complete results.
Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive vein procedure. For this tried-and-true technique, a fine needle is used to inject a solution into the vein. Dr. Ostad may use an advanced, ultrasound-guided technique to insert the solution into the affected vein. The solution irritates the walls of the vein, which then causes the vein to collapse. Because the collapsed vein does not allow any blood flow, the body automatically reroutes the blood so that it flows through other healthy veins in the body. Over time, the collapsed, destroyed vein is absorbed by the body.
Depending on the condition of the veins, most patients see visibly noticeable results after about one week for laser therapy and almost immediately to one week after for sclerotherapy patients. Some patients may require multiple treatment sessions to achieve the results they desire. Patients will experience a boost in confidence and the freedom to wear whatever they’d like since they don’t have to worry about unsightly veins showing anymore.
