What is the recovery after a chemical peel?

Recovery after a chemical peel will reflect the type of peel.

  • Light peels penetrate only the surface layer of skin, so there is little or no downtime—usually only temporary pinkness
  • With a medium peel, you can expect some swelling and approximately a week of downtime, as the skin flakes and renews
  • After a deep peel, you will have redness and swelling and may experience some discomfort; a dressing will be applied to your skin, and medication may be prescribed to manage any discomfort—a deep peel requires several weeks of recovery as your skin is renewed
