You thought the angst of acne would be behind you after the teenage years and puberty. Whether you suffered for years with acne, still experience adult acne, or have scars to remind you of your prior skin problems, treatments are available. Located in New York, NY, Dr. Ariel Ostad offers laser procedures for to remove acne scars and smooth your skin.

Preventing scars

As with many problems, prevention is often the best treatment method. Remember, do not pop pimples! We understand the embarrassment caused by acne but picking at it only makes the problem worse. Popping pimples causes redness, broken skin, inflammation, infection, and, of course, scars. Avoiding sun exposure helps treat acne as well. Overexposure to the sun makes acne worse and last longer.

Scar formation

When your pimples burst or are popped, bacteria spreads. That combined with dead skin cells spread under the skin causing bigger lesions. Your body works to repair the damage by triggering collagen growth. Unfortunately, the new collagen may cause the skin’s texture to change creating the formation of hypertrophic or atrophic scars.

  • Hypertrophic scars are the result of too much collagen formation. This causes bumps or raised areas on the skin.
  • Atrophic scars result from lost tissue creating a depression or indentation in the skin.

Treating your scars

Acne scars have been treated with lasers since the 1980s. Advancements in medical technology have brought about the use of the Fraxel Laser. This laser stimulates cell turnover and skin rejuvenation. Patients receive treatment with minimal discomfort, downtime, or side effects. The skin is rejuvenated without the noticeable signs of surgery. As it is a laser treatment, the light energy focuses on the treatment area so the skin around the scar is not touched or damaged.
